Rest assured it is not defective. Sometimes the thermometers can be stuck and need a good 'kick start' in order to properly work.
We suggest you place the thermometer in a small amount of boiling water, just be extra careful not to fully submerge it. Doing this will generally help, otherwise, please let us know.
